Greg Morrison, Syracuse University
Testimonial: Greg Morrison Spanish art has a rich history and Madrid has some of the best art galleries in Spain. From the 16th and 17th century works of El Greco and Diego Velazquez, to Francisco de Goya’s early portraits of the royalty and his eventual revolutionary, yet dark style in his “Black Paintings,” then of course the bizarre yet beautiful styles of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, Spanish art has it all...

Shopping and Beauty

Madrid is a shopper’s paradise, where designer stores compete for attention with small, quirky shops. There are two main shopping areas in the city - the crowded and popular streets around the pedestrianized Preciados and the Puerta del Sol and the Salamanca district which is host to designer brands as well as up-market antiques. For the latest streetware, visit the Chueca district.

A favorite local activity is shopping at the street or flea markets, where you can spend a pleasant few hours browsing for antiques, second-hand clothes, pottery, handicrafts and furniture. Every Sunday the legendary El Rastro flea market in Ribera de Curtidores (Metro: Latina) is a must for any visitor to Madrid for the variety of goods to be found, from antiques to trendy garments. Be careful, however, as pickpockets frequent the market.
Among the food markets, it is worth visiting the colourful Mercado de San Miguel in Plaza San Miguel nearby Plaza Mayor. The stallholders offer an array of delicious produce, including traditional cured meats and Spanish cheeses.
As for annual fairs, the Feria del Libro, held at the end of May, is an impressive outdoor bookfair. Hundreds of stalls are set up in the Parque del Retiro, and publishers and bookshop owners exhibit their wares for two weeks. On the Paseo de Recoletos, the Feria de Artesanos takes place every December selling all kinds of crafts, making it ideal for Christmas shopping. Throughout December, the Plaza Mayor is the venue for a traditional Christmas fair.
Among the best shopping centers are El Jardín de Serrano (high-quality galleria that stocks fashion, jewellery, gifts and accessories), ABC Serrano, La Vaguada (more variety at cheaper prices), El Corte Inglés (with many branches throughout the city) and The Principe Pio shopping center.
The Spanish chain stores Zara and Mango offer easy-to-wear clothes for women at very good prices, with stores branches all over the city. For high-end fashion, there are many well-known Spanish designers, such as Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Antonio Pernas, Loewe, Purificación García, Roberto Verino, and Adolfo Domínguez. All stores can be found in c/ Serrano in the Salamanca district.
