THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE

The origins of The International Institute date from 1871 when an American protestant couple, William Gulick and Alice Gordon Gulick noticed how little opportunity for education Spanish women had and decided to open a school for them. Ten years later, several female colleges from the States joined to raise funds for a building. In 1910 the Gulicks bought the “Alice Gordon Gulick Memorial Hall” which came to be called “The International Institute” in Madrid.
In time, popular and prestigious USA colleges and universities began to offer classes there. Current US universities “in house” include: Boston University, SUNY-Albany, and, since 1983, Syracuse University.
The International Institute In 1982 the building was declared an artistic and historic monument and it was remodelled in 2002. Among the multiple activities sponsored by the International Institute are the following:
  • Cultural activities such as lectures, concerts, seminars, etc. Its main aim is to develop links between Americans and Spaniards and also to promote the contribution of women in all public spheres.
  • English language courses for Spanish students in their English department.
  • A conversation exchange program between American students and Spaniards.
  • A library available to all students and staff with more than 70,000 volumes.
