ACTIVITIES:

SU Madrid has arranged for several academic excursions and activities throughout the beginning of the semester, which are meant to complement your introductory travelling seminars and the rest of your educational experience. We call it Scholarship in Action, and we pride ourselves in doing it better than anybody else.

Day study tours


tiermes Tiermes, San Baudelio Chapel, Berlanga Castle and Gormaz Fortress:
The day begins with a visit to Tiermes, a Celtiberian and Roman city, carved into the sandstone bedrock, called “Spain's Petra”. The trip continues with a visit to San Budelio Chapel and Berlanga Castle, a fortress built on older ruins. Fun to explore! The day concludes with a visit to Gormaz Fortress, the largest in Europe by surface area.

Segovia
Segovia:
Our destination for this day trip is the quaint medieval town built around a beautiful castle, a magnificent Gothic cathedral and an impressive Roman aqueduct. There we will see life as it existed before Spain became a world power.

Valle de los Caídos



El Escorial and Valle de los caídos:
The day begins with a visit to El Escorial, an awesome palace-monastery complex outside Madrid, residence of King Philip II and his court, and a must-see for all visitors. From within its walls, that powerful king ruled half the world. The day trip concludes with a visit to Valley of the Fallen, to see the burial place of Franco, the longest standing dictator in Europe’s history.

Segovia
Dos de mayo historical tour:
This walking tour, lead by a Syracuse Madrid professor, traces the events of the uprising against Napoleon of May 2nd 1808. Students will stand in the very places where the city of Madrid rebelled against the French and fought to re-establish the Bourbon Monarchy.

Monument for the victims of the 11M

Political walking tour:

Lead by a political science professor, this walking tour explores Spain’s young democracy, how it functions, and the problems it encounters. Students will visit Madrid’s Senate, Parliament, the founding place of the socialist party, and the monuments in Retiro and Atocha which pay homage to victims of terrorism.

Toledo:
Toledo has sometimes been dubbed a “summary” of the history of Spain, and many Spaniards do not hesitate to declare that if a tourist only had one day to visit our country, it should be spent nowhere other than in Toledo. We offer precisely that possibility, allowing our students to relive for one whole day the drama and excitement of some of the most amazing chapters in human history while enjoying this city full of beauty and history.
